Packhorse…another word for mother...

packhorse photo

While walking the kids home today after school a word popped into my mind….packhorse.  Here I was loaded up with two backpacks, one swimming bag weighed down with a wet towel and togs as well as my shoulder bad containing 3 umbrellas, two gumboots and my book.  Trying to walk/drag the kids home (1.09km away) before the rain started I realised that packhorse was just another word for mother.  Actually so is taxi, maid, chef and seamstress.  Oh well, another word to add to my resume I suppose.

Seven Day Mum/Dad...

What does it mean to be a seven day mum ( or dad as the case may be)?  Let me tell you in bullet point:

PROS

  • You never miss your child’s “first step”or “first word” or first anything.
  • You form a bond with your children that is strong and true.(no amount of gifts or outings can buy)
  • You provide a safe family environment that brings peace to the family unit as a whole.
  • You are the rock in your children’s lives – you are here for them now and they know you will be there for them in the future.(if you ever get off the computer)
  • You are doing what is RIGHT and what is natural…..caring for your offspring.

CONS

  • Seven days a week 24 hours a day always on call work schedule.
  • No sick days EVER!
  • No union to go running to when work place practices are unfair.
  • It sure doesn’t pay well.  You have to stretch the family income in such a way that a seasoned accountant looks like a first grader.
  • For at least five years your music choices are restricted to “The Wiggles” and “Hi 5″.

Your family is your life and your life is good.  I wouldn’t trade it for day care and the rat race in a million years.  More household income would be great but not at the expense of my children.  They are only this age once…no second chance… so enjoy your kids and be happy where you are.
