I almost swallowed a fly!

A fly flew into my mouth the other day but thank God I spat the filthy thing out. Maybe I talk too much and spend way too much time with my mouth open?  Who knows but it got me thinking about that childrens song, the one about the woman who swallowed a fly then subsequently swallowed a range of larger animals in order to catch the previous animal.  Quite a disturbing song really but then most old time nursery rhymes and games have a dark aspect to them… ‘Ring a Ring a Rosey’ for example with it’s ties back to the Bubonic Plague.  How about ‘Jack and Jill’, have you ever wondered why the boy was wearing a crown?  Well how’s this explanation…Jack is a reference to King Louis XVI and he lost his crown because he was found guilty of treason and was beheaded in January of 1793. Then of course ‘Jill came tumbling after’ is a reference to Queen Marie Antoinette who was also beheaded for treason in October of the same year… the French sure know how to treat their royalty!  There are loads of nursery rhymes filled with death, torture, disasters, and our kids are merrily singing to each and every one of them as if it’s all rainbows and lollipops.

one day after bringing home my first born I was humming “rock a bye baby” and stopped and sang the words to myself then decided I would not sing that song to my child anymore. it also got me thinking about the words to nursery ryhmes we use on a daily basis and it is quite a morose world to be a part of, so best not to think abotu it and just sing the songs all light and happy like….rainbows and lollipops and the kids are none the wiser. it must be something every mother thinks about at some point?
