Rental Madness

For rent

I just got off the phone with the government department associated with rent assistance etc.  This is pure madness in my eyes, are you sitting down?  Get this, it doesn’t matter how high rents go up they can’t help us.  Well that’s not entirely true because our household income entitles us to government housing the only problem is that there is a nine year waiting list!  So here we are earning 2/3 the amount of income housing commission tenants are allowed to earn yet we pay DOUBLE their rents.  It’s about to increase as well so while people in public housing are paying $150 a week we are looking at $380… on 2/3 their wage don’t forget!  How on earth are you supposed to save a deposit to buy a house if rents alone are killing you? With 70% of the population home owners the government can ignore people like us so I don’t expect this situation to improve any time soon.   Well that’s my rant for the day… over and out.

  1. That sux :(

  2. Doesn’t sound like a lot of fun.. I’ve never been a fan of “ownership”. I work in the HVAC trade and the shit I see in most houses, including upper middle class houses, I’m not even a little bit ready to take responsibility for it.. roofing, plumbing and of course the number one reason why houses burn: electrical. My landlord can take that responsibility all day long. I’ll just keep paying rent.

  3. Sorry to hear that. There are tons of other non-governmental rent assistance agencies you can go to.

  4. Naming?

I’m a single mum paying private rent and the Housing Commission agency said that even on the sole parent pension you still can’t get into a housing commission house any sooner than 7 - 9 years. I mean come on, imagine your abusive husband left you, in debt, no job, on the pension that doesn’t cover much all with a baby to raise and the government said that even with domestic violence order and no job they won’t do anything to help! Thanks!
