Op shop treasures

op shop

When I was younger I worked in an opportunity shop for a short time.  It opened my eyes to a world I knew nothing of.  I found books for 20 cents and toys (which can all be washed) at amazing prices.  There is also a lot of junk these stores try to palm off to customers but if you can look at it as a treasure hunt it can be heaps of fun.  These past school holidays I took my girls op shopping and my seven year old found a real treasure.  Amongst all the broken toys she found an entire vintage Littlest Pet Shop Center.  At first I thought it was just the pet shop carry case but once we opened it the reality of what we had found hit us.  The case opened out to a three level pet shop with 20 pets and accessories inside.  Nothing was broken and all the decorative stickers were still attached.  Now it was time to play it cool and see how much they wanted for it.  Trying to hide my excitement (a good poker face helps) we took it up to the counter and asked how much  it would be.  The middle aged man looked at us, my daughter with her Barbie wallet open reaching for her coins, then he said “$3 will do it.”  I couldn’t believe it…three dollars!  That was a real bargain, I’d expect to pay around $35 on ebay plus the postage costs.  In fact I have seen complete sets sell for $60 depending on the pets included.  So don’t dismiss opportunity shops and other such charity shops as being full of junk… you may just find a real treasure inside!
