Can’t live without my drums

Chicken

Let start by saying that I have no musical talent at all.  Is farting musical?  Barring that my talents (what ever they may be) are NOT with instrumental drums.  I’m talking about chicken drumsticks.  I couldn’t live without them…neither could my family since I do the cooking.  Red meat is just TOO expensive and for $4 worth of drumsticks I can feed my family of  four for two nights.  How? I hear you asking, well I simply boil my drumsticks and make a hearty soup with the stock (sacrificing a bit of the chicken meat with the stock) and use the rest of the meat for tacos.  There are plenty of ways to use chicken and I find drumsticks on special quite a bit.  So here are some other ways I use drums:

  • Curry - I tend to take the bone out when using drums and chicken curry is delicious.  I bulk up the meal by adding potato or my favourite sweet potato to the curry.
  • Spring rolls - I boil the chicken for spring rolls so that I can make a soup with the broth.  (Two meals from 1 kg for a family of four)
  • Stir-fry - Take the bone out and cut the meat into strips yourself. It’s so much cheaper than buying the pre-sliced chicken from the shops.  It will take no time at all and save $$$.
  • Apricot Chicken - Once again I take the bone out of the drum and dice the chicken.
  • Skewer sticks - Bone out and dice the meat then whack the pieces on a bamboo skewer with onion, capsicum, pineapple and broccoli. YUM!  marinade them if you wish.
  • Schnitzels - I take the bone out by slicing from top to bottom then around the base of the drum.  Peeling the flesh off while slicing down the bone you end up with one complete fillet.  I take my frustrations out on that fillet with a tenderiser.  Crumb the sucker and there you go…schnitzel!  So much cheaper that buying them already done.

Of course there are many more ways of using chicken but my intention is not to write recipes.  I simply want to say that with a little effort you can utilize the humble drum for just about anything!
